Synonyms¶
Premium Feature
Synonym management is available with a premium license. See Free vs Premium for details.
Synonyms improve search accuracy by expanding queries with alternative terms. When a visitor uses a word that differs from your website content, synonyms help the chatbot still find the right information.

Why Use Synonyms?¶
Consider this example: your website describes your product as a "laptop", but visitors often search for "notebook" or "computer". Without synonyms, those queries might miss relevant content. By adding a synonym mapping, you ensure all variations find the same content.
Adding a Synonym¶
- Enter the Term — the word as it appears in your content (e.g., "laptop")
- Enter the Synonyms — comma-separated alternatives (e.g., "notebook, computer, portable PC")
- Optionally check Bidirectional — when enabled, searching for any synonym also matches the original term
- Optionally check Case Sensitive — when enabled, matching respects capitalization
- Click Add Synonym
Adding a new synonym with bidirectional matching enabled
Managing Synonyms¶
The synonym table shows all configured mappings:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Term | The primary term |
| Synonyms | The alternative terms |
| Bidirectional | Whether the mapping works both ways |
| Actions | Edit or Delete buttons |
Editing a Synonym¶
Click Edit next to a synonym to modify its terms or options.
Deleting a Synonym¶
Click Delete to remove a synonym mapping. This takes effect immediately — future queries will no longer expand using the deleted synonym.
Import & Export¶
Exporting¶
Click Export JSON in the page header to download all synonyms as a JSON file. Use this for:
- Backing up your synonym configuration
- Migrating synonyms to another site
- Sharing synonym lists with team members
Importing¶
Click Import JSON to upload a previously exported JSON file. The imported synonyms are added to your existing list.
Best Practices¶
- Start with common alternatives — Add synonyms for terms visitors frequently use differently than your content
- Use bidirectional for true synonyms — Enable bidirectional for words that are interchangeable (e.g., "laptop" ↔ "notebook")
- Use one-directional for specializations — If visitors say "cheap options" but your content says "budget-friendly", map "cheap" → "budget-friendly" without the reverse
- Review search results — Check the Conversations page to see what visitors are asking and identify terms that need synonyms
